A Quick Experiment in True Health Care Reform
Due to ridiculous rules and laws, Americans are only allowed to purchase health insurance in their home state. I have had the same plan for over four years. It is essentially your basic catastrophic plan with a $5,000 deductible. I have no liability up to $5 million after that. I have been to the doctor once and paid $250 out of pocket. My premium was $86 per month at first, but it is now $124. I decided to "shop around" as if the option was open. I found a similar plan for $79 per month in another state:

My current plan is with BlueCross BlueShield. I also shopped around per the status quo and found these options:

Not exactly an apples-to-apples match, but close. The $91.06 quote is probably the best match to the $79 quote. The $79 quote did receive a higher rating though and is HSA eligible. I suspect if my search went into other states my options would get better. Now what if I could choose what is covered? I could eliminate mental health, hair plugs, etc, and score even more savings. DEREGULATION will create CHOICE and produce SAVINGS. It looks like $600 per year for me potentially. Yes, I did notice there are plans available now for less than my current $124 per month. Time to "shop around" within the borders of my state.
